| | PRODUCTIONS | | | | | Synopsis | | This is the story of Narcilla, a shy young potato sorter who lives in the crude, hand-to-mouth world of a small southern town. The story takes place in the warehouse where she works with Dorothy and their boss, Hank Lacey. When Dorothy finds something unusual in her basket of potatoes, Narcilla uses her imagination to create what she longs for: a friend. So when Hank comes on to her, Narcilla uses the same process to create something else: a lover. In doing so she defies local protocol, and is pigeonholed by Hank and Dorothy with the lowest of the low. But Narcilla and her new friend don’t mind at all. In fact, they are delighted.Potato Girl received "Best Play" award from the Institute for Southern Studies and was published in the Changing Scenes issue of Southern Exposure magazine.It was first presented in New York at the Ensemble Studio Theatre’s Octoberfest, where it was directed by Zach Grenier; and in North Carolina at the Best Lunch Theatre Ever, where it was directed by Catherine Rhea-Darby. The play was also included in the anthology One Act Plays for Acting Students, edited by Professor Norman Bert (Meriwether). |
