Synopsis
This dramatic work introduces audiences to Phillis Wheatley, America's first African-American poet. Brought to America on a slave ship in 1761 at age eight, Phillis was sold as a slave to Boston's well-to-do Wheatley family. After discovering that she possessed a brilliant mind, they educated her and promoted Phillis among influential circles. Against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War, her fortunes change with their deaths. She is granted her freedom, which throws her into a new kind of slavery: poverty. Penniless and alone, Phillis Wheatley dies at the age of 31. Her story compels audiences to consider the true nature of freedom, as well as giving her groundbreaking poetry a chance to speak to listeners today. Imagination's Music offers actors of all races an opportunity to explore her story—and our own country—together.
