Only this isn’t a particularly joyful reunion, for Alice has just been paroled. Her crime? Felony child abuse. To quiet her newborn, Alice had fallen into the habit of giving the baby whiskey. One night the child fell into a coma, and, fearing the infant was dead, Alice wrapped him in newspapers and hid him in the trash. Fortunately a neighbor had been watching and saved the baby’s life.
Now Alice must somehow repair her own life. She and Mona have never had a loving relationship, and the incident with the baby has made Mona dislike her own child even more. She tries, without success, to get Alice out of town on the bus.
