| | | Les Epstein teaches drama and literature at the Community High School in Roanoke. He previously served as Executive Director for the Children’s Theatre of Winston-Salem for seven seasons. While in North Carolina he produced and presented over three hundred performances of theater for young audiences and families, while staging productions of Little House Christmas, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and The Trial of Goldilocks. Mr. Epstein spent ten seasons as education director and production coordinator for Opera Columbus, where he worked behind the scenes of more than thirty opera productions of works ranging from Mozart to Wagner. He created and produced over 1200 education performances and workshops around the state of Ohio including writing the libretto for the Underground Railroad opera, Barefoot. While in Columbus he staged works by Barab, Mozart, Menotti, Humperdinck as well as regional premieres of works by Edward Barnes and Hans Krasa. Mr. Epstein was honored with a Campaign for Success Award from Opera America and A Ten Young Outstanding Citizens Award from the Columbus Jaycees for his efforts. A produced playwright and published author his work has been performed at the Majestic Theatre in Chillicothe, Otterbein College, Dillard Auditorium At Winston-Salem State University and at the Belfast Maskers Theatre in Maine. He has guest directed productions for the Columbus Light Opera (Offenbach’s The Isle of Tulipitan), The Brock Center for the Arts (Graceland), the Andy Griffith Playhouse (South Pacific, It’s a Wonderful Life, Lion in Winter) and the Paramount Theatre (Miracle Worker, Seussical). He received Pearl Awards for Best Director for The Miracle Worker and Seussical as well as an “Opie” for Best Director for his staging of South Pacific in Mt. Airy. On stage, he has appeared in productions of Guys and Dolls, The Student Prince, Desert Song, Measure for Measure and As You Like It among others. Mr. Epstein received degrees in theater production and literature at Otterbein College, a master’s degree in English from Miami (Ohio) University and continued with studies in literature at New York University and theater education at The Ohio State University. | |
