Author's Notes:
“Reflexes” was the second play I'd ever written and seen produced, and the second play in which the title character escapes with a loved one to France, a similarity I was generously permitted to interpret as “personal style” rather than “creative bankruptcy.” Bill Bungeroth, my director, meticulously and brilliantly choreographed “Reflexes” to the William Tell Overture, which he discovered reached its crescendos at roughly the same times as the play. As Robert, Christian Breecher, a man of Cary Grant-ish good looks, writhed and thrashed onstage, howling his lines above the swelling Overture as he wrestled with a leg that seemed genuinely to have taken on a life of its own, in a performance that instantly became the single best memory of my theatre career.
 
 
Synopsis
Robert's leg comes horribly to life after he cheats at the reflex test to impress his great love, the nurse Yvonne. Robert's leg threatens all he holds dear, getting him in trouble with the mob, murdering innocents, and threatening to steal away Yvonne, who is torn between love for Robert and for his scofflaw appendage. Beneath the spectral gaze of a wise ghost, Robert undertakes an epic journey from the doctor's office to the French countryside, and learns, in the process, surprisingly little.
