Author's Notes:
I wrote "Three Toasts" because I was frustrated that people in movies know exactly what to say, and when, and wind up in each others' arms at the end. I wanted to write something more approaching my own reality, where the characters are at the mercy of a conversation none of them want to have and where they hide their most deeply felt emotions with cheap gags, to the extent that someone can martyr himself, and no one will understand why. The idea of "a martyr falling on his sword in the woods" was hilarious to me, and my director, William Barbour, staged the conversation so naturally that I felt my chest constricting at certain points. It was such a relief to be observing the banality and repression of it all for once, and not contributing to it.

Synopsis
Josh dresses his up-and-coming movie star friend, Ham, in ridiculous clothing in a desperate bid to win the affections of Tasha the night before Josh and Ham move to Canada. In case the clothing doesn't turn Tasha off, Josh has brought a bottle of cyanide, and has placed himself in charge of the drinks. Ten minutes of small talk, petty jealousy, celebrity and murder.
