Author's Notes:
I was looking for a topic that would make a powerful statement and at the same time educate and dispel some of the myths about AIDS. During my research, I made numerous trips to the library, checking out countless books about AIDS and HIV. Time and again, as I was checking out books, I noticed the library staff looking me over and distancing themselves. The changing of their attitudes towards me and and their distancing of themselves was the foundation for this play. This event is even referred to in one of Kyles' lines from the play. I have seen Normal People done by a number of theatre groups and it never fails to make an impression. A strong contest piece.

The study of friendship versus fear begins when Amanda reveals to her friends that she’s been diagnosed with AIDS. They react with fear and ignorance and completely abandon one of their best friends. Only one of Amanda’s friends takes the time to learn more about the disease and with Kyle’s support, Amanda takes the audience on a journey of strength and self-discovery and delivers a heart-rending soliloquy that will leave your audience spellbound.
